Intermissions

Intermissions is a story that defines the artist and periods of interruption that occur in his life and work. It is told through a series of prints and illustrations focusing on opportunities of growth and inspiration in stages of adjustment. Broken into three acts, Intermissions aims to shed light on the uncertainty of these times, and to accentuate the role of the artist as a conscious participant in them.

ACT 1

I am shaped by the transitions of my childhood. Back and forth and back again. Defined by interruptions out of my control. Like divorce. For the first time I understood separation anxiety and fear of being apart from my parents as they split. Dividing time made me question the value of family early on.

As a child, though, I could see the relationships between my grandparents and my mother and father were strong. It was through them that I understood family is the foundation of who I am.

ACT 2

Adapting to city life in college was a turning point where I began to witness everyday life with a different awareness and sense of curiosity. Adulthood offered me freedom and independence.

Why, then, does every train ride feel like I’m abandoning my past? Why does it feel like I’m being selfish? I can feel it in the pit of my stomach. Every stop is a veil placed over a life I’m leaving behind. The greater the distance, the more it fades.

ACT 3

In the face of uncertainty, I’ve learned to accept what I cannot control. In these moments, in the intermissions that occur every day, it’s best to reflect and observe. To stop and catch your breath. These transitions are opportunities.
